Project: Strategic Assessment for the Development of a Friendship Technology Incubator

Client: Allegheny Ventures/Friendship Technology Park Incubator

Battelle assisted Allegheny Ventures, Inc. in developing a concept design and implementation plan for the Friendship Technology Park Incubator in Hagerstown, Maryland. The project involved a benchmarking and best practice analysis of successful incubators around the country, as well as a conceptual analysis that identified the resources available in the region that would allow the incubator to capitalize on the issues important to the success of likely tenants. Ultimately, a financial feasibility study and action plan was developed to position the facility for success.

Project: Observations and Suggestions:
Strategic Planning for the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeast Pennsylvania

Client: Ben Franklin Technology Partners (BFTP) Centers—Pennsylvania

Battelle developed a strategy to reposition the four Ben Franklin Technology Partners Centers. The ten-year strategy is intended to help the BFTP Centers better assist industry and increase focus on in-depth entrepreneurship services. The strategy outlined important actions and responsibilities for an improved partnership between the BFTP Centers and the State. The study includes performance measures adopted by Pennsylvania to measure future success of the program.

Project: Pittsburgh BioVentures/Life Science Greenhouse

Client: Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Regional Alliance

Battelle worked with Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance to help create the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse. This BioVenture is a joint effort to assist in the growth of the emerging biotechnology cluster in the Pittsburgh region. Battelle conducted a regional bioscience core competency assessment, an economic analysis, an analysis of the regional enabling technology infrastructure, and a benchmarking task comparing Pittsburgh with similar regions to determine the extent to which Pittsburgh is able to compete with these locations in the field of biotechnology. In order to implement BioVenture, a Prospectus was developed, complete with staffing, financial considerations, mission, and scope, as well as metrics to determine the effectiveness of activities. Battelle was then engaged by the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, the entity created as a result of the Prospectus, to help implement the strategy.

Project: Great Valley – Pennsylvania’s I-80 Technology Corridor: Growing a 21st Century Knowledge Economy in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties

The proposed action plan, which has been endorsed by state and regional leaders, recommends activities to develop a core competency in information technologies by creating an Information Technology Institute; creating a support infrastructure for technological innovators and entrepreneurs; developing a partnership between regional colleges and universities to create an environment attractive to young professionals; and undertaking initiatives designed to attract, retain, and develop knowledge workers.

Project: An Assessment of Research and Technology-Related Space Demands, Characteristics and Potential Site Locations: Advancing Pittsburg’s Economic Future

Client: Allegheny Conference on Community and Economic Development

Battelle is assisting key stakeholders in Pittsburgh to consider how best to support and leverage the development of its major world-class research drivers—the University of Pittsburgh and its associated Medical Center, and Carnegie Mellon University. These research drivers have been fueling major expansion of research facilities, primarily in the Oakland area. Looking to the future, the ability of the region to ensure quality sites to house continued strong research growth is a concern, since the Oakland area is substantially built. Moreover, the region needs a strategy on how to leverage its growing hub of research facilities to create a physical environment that can be supportive of, and a magnet for, technology-based economic development. Battelle is conducting a consolidated assessment of these issues, including addressing meeting space needs through a potential research park.
