What We Do

In today's economy, it is vital to design and operate economic development to respond to our fast-changing world. Investments in the new technology-driven economy—from research parks and laboratories to professional and industry networks—is the surest way to set your place in the future. Battelle's Technology Partnership Practice (TPP) helps regions and states position themselves in the New Economy. Our approach is simple:

  • Step One: Analysis. Through analysis, TPP discovers strategic links between the public and private sectors, resulting in economic growth. We carefully assess the impact and direction of our clients' technology programs and services.

  • Step Two: Strategy. Based on our analyses, TPP develops appropriate strategies for regions, firms, and universities, making you more competitive in the technology-driven economy. We formulate strategies to make the most of your existing economic assets and improve your bottom line.

  • Step Three: Action. The final step to our service is implementation. TPP catalyzes partnerships among industry, higher education, and government. We also design the programs and mechanisms necessary to build a technology-driven economy.

Technology Strategic Planning

TPP's analyses of a region's core competencies in industry and higher education identify the basis for development strategies. Our cluster-analyses delineate current and emerging industry strengths. By benchmarking a region or state with comparable areas in the U.S. and abroad, we recognize best practices and common ingredients for success. By involving a community's business, academic, and public leadership in an assessment of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis), we enhance the community's understanding of its assets and potential.

These four steps lead to a complete set of strategies and actions for a region's development and growth; these strategies are "owned" by regional and state stakeholders and designed for implementation. Time and again, Battelle's work does not gather dust on a shelf. Instead, it becomes a set of state and regional programs, policies, and private and public investments helping to create regional and state New Economies.

Technical Assistance and Problem Solving

Battelle's Technology Partnership Practice is led by senior-level managers experienced in developing private-public partnerships. Principles of TPP have played major roles in establishing successful programs for technology-led economic development. Our wealth of knowledge and experience allows Battelle's clients to solve problems. Battelle's TPP are "hands-on" problem solvers, with knowledge of what works and what does not. We share this knowledge with our many clients.

Program Design and Implementation

Battelle's TPP can help ideas become concrete plans and programs. We prioritize actions and outline work programs for complete designs and strategies. We identify partner institutions, necessary resources, and develop a timeframe for implementing our suggested strategies. And, in many cases, we maintain an ongoing relationship with our clients as they implement the program. Whether your goal is a new technology center, a center of excellence, or a Prospectus with business plans and a framework for new private-public and business-higher education partnerships, TPP can show you how to turn your vision into reality.

Impact Assessment and Evaluation

TPP has access to Battelle's vast wealth of resources and expertise in statistics, mathematics, survey research design, and other fields. TPP has direct experience evaluating technology programs and measuring their economic impact. Battelle's team can work with you to develop a set of measures to determine success, collect and analyze relevant data, develop performance and progress indicators, or carry out economic impact studies of proposed technology infrastructure investments. Battelle's team can help move your region toward a New Economy future.
